She Stoops to Conquer at The Abbey Theatre 2014/15

Directed by Conall Morrison.

"The backbone of this bountiful comedy is the hugely impressive set, designed by Liam Doona. The 18th century mansion setting looms vast and impressive over the action, its two story design allowing for a series of comic juxtapositions. For a farce such as this to truly succeed, the production must rely on a solid and functional set. The fast pace action, overlapping of storylines and pacey timing is only enhanced by Doona’s expert design. As the mad cap collection of characters blunder and sneak through the space, it is only a matter of time before it all falls asunder."

From the moment a rag-tag bunch of Georgian-era servants emerge from Liam Doona’s two-tiered set to play a wheezing musical overture, the faded grandeur of the household of Mr Hardcastle (Jon Kenny) is wonderfully evoked, with Joan O’Clery’s costumes adding seasonal colour. The cast throw themselves into the task of breathing new life into the text by indulging in slapstick, hamming up the repartee and playing to the gallery.

Liam Doona's set is a complex and wonderfully effective piece of versatility, lit perfectly by Ben Ormerod, while Joan O'Clery's costumes are mood and period-perfect. (The Abbey does production values extremely well, which is as it should be in a national theatre.)
